Long hinted at but delayed far too much, I have finally done a review for Darkest Hour which I’m fortunate to enough to have had published online with Heavy Magazine. In an interesting turn of events 3 of my posts with 3 different publications have gone online today which is kind of cool, I’m very grateful for these opportunities and I guess this reflects the breadth of my luck.

Some reviews you worry about, some you feel pretty good about and some you get excited about. I will be interested to see what you think of my review and the film. You can comment, like or share at Heavy at your will. The film is a muscular contemporary telling of events from long ago and humanises Churchill while buying into the legend. Gary Oldman is of course the front runner for Best Actor now although before a pick-up in the U.S. Box Office following his Golden Globe win the race was more open. You can read more of my thoughts here https://heavymag.com.au/film-review-darkest-hour/ It remains a thrill to regularly contribute to Heavy which is continuing to grow from strength to strength.

Heavy is an independent magazine and website that is all about the music and specifically heavy music and supporting the Australian music scene in general. Fortunately for me they do cover film as well and I have been fortunate to have a few things published there.

  1. You are on a review-roll at the moment , Lloyd!
Despite my admiration for both Oldman and Scott-Thomas, I struggle with the adoration of Churchill in this country. (And others) As a result, I will consign this cinematic biographical love fest to a future viewing on TV one day. If I am still alive to see it, of course… 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. Another good review, Lloyd. I have always admired Oldman’s acting but I think the atmosphere in this country against domestic violence just might rob him of any chance for an Oscar.

      1. His ex, 3rd of 5, is waging campaign against him claiming their 4 years of marriage was pure hell. Here in the US now no proof is needed, just an accusation. The only one that seems to be immune from this type of thinking is Trump.

      2. Well I certainly hope that wasn’t the case and I hope that she sees justice if it was the case. It’s an interesting time, on the one hand we’re seeing positive change. In the past these scumbags would lawyer up and everything would go away. Now their victims can bring them to light by going public and there are consequences for them even if you can’t get your day in court. The problem is that sooner or later somebody will be falsely accussed and at that point we will defer back to innoncent until proven guilty but hopefully real change to makes it more difficult for abuse to take place or go unanswered comes to pass. Don’t kid yourself men are abused too but women abuse power as well. In the case of Oldman, this doesn’t seem to be getting much traction. We’ll see.

  3. I keep seeing this on the Library recommends shelf here in my adopted hometown. I need to watch this! Thank you for the great review and facts I will keep in mind. Smiles, Robin 🌞
