Johnny Depp plumbs new depths in the latest Pirates movie out tomorrow. Thankfully Geoffrey Rush remains a better part of a franchise on its way out. I’m very grateful to have another review of a brand new blockbuster movie published over at the wonderful Buzz Magazine. It means a lot to get published on such sites and I appreciate anybody taking the time to click on the extra link and check out my work.
Based out of Victoria, Buzz Magazine was one the longest running street press magazines in Australia being published in print from 1993 to 2010. Some fine writers have worked for Buzz over the years and gone onto successful careers in media since and there is simply no way to measure the contribution the mag made to local music over its print run. With such words and minimal advertising on the website the impression could be taken that Buzz is now semi-retired. Yet the site is quite prolific with new write-ups on a daily basis, the ongoing interest of fans old and new and contributions from some very talented people indeed.
My wife enjoyed the film well enough so maybe it’s just me but I feel a responsibility to tell you that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is still out in cinemas and a damn fine film. Once again I appreciate anybody who clicks on the link to read it and hope you enjoy.

Sean liked the first but I never got into this franchise and am unlikely to start now.

I will go read your review but may have to respond before reading! I am calling this the summation of loose ends, having a young man be related to one of the main character show up and a daughter for one of the older characters made it even more a “family movie.” My 12 and 8 year old grandsons raved and explained their favorite parts during our 45 minute dinner out. It was fun, loved seeing Uncle Jack (Jack Sparrow’s Uncle, of course) played by Paul McCartney.
Geoffrey Rush manages to be a more likable character in this one. The gross and silly underwater undead pirates were less favorite parts but our 150 year old hometown theatre was packed and chuckles and guffaws are always nice to hear! Dead silence is a little eerie at a comedic drama.
The credits came to an end and I cried a few tears. The snippet known as “credit cookies” made me hope maybe the Pirates will come back once again. I loved each of the cookies for the pirates films. The dog being the King of the island was funny but the one with Keira and her son waiting for Orlando to come back was beautiful few minutes ending cookie.
I missed Keith Richards, by the way. . .

I read your review and I understand the sadness of Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow. I agree, he is a mere “shell” of the Great pirate in the first movie. I also am thinking he was given this role and it was not J. Depp’s writing (nor acting) but someone else’s vision of his older, yet less wiser, character. I mean how can we blame the actor for carrying out the lines he is given?
I would ask my older grandkids if they asked: “What happens when Jack doesn’t win his possible “love and saving grace?” (Keira Knightley)
There were flirtatious moments back in the first one.
“What happens if you decide to drink a lot and haven’t a job?” Jack rallies and gets a sense of pride once the Black Pearl gets back out of the ocean. . . . Hope may once again rise up!
Your review was great and it was good you added that your wife enjoyed it! Now, I added I enjoyed it since it had many happy endings and helped bring someone who was left to the barnacles back to life!
I can’t go back on my opinion of the film Robin. For me Pirates 1 and Pirates 5 are a classic example of the different between a good escapist blockbuster and a relatively average one. However it warms my heart to know that you had a great time at the movies with family and that they endlessly mused about it afterwards and that the audience at large had a good time. We went to a preview screen with a large crowd too but they were not as lively which is a bad sign since they were seeing a movie for free. Geoffrey Rush was my saving grace but I appreciate you pointing out the return of the Black Pearl spells a turning point perhaps for Jack and that a film with happy endings can be moving. I’m glad you were moved, its why we go to the movies. I was moved by the ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and its a good feeling. Best wishes Robin.
